Gates were, routed by rescue parties from the Admiralty on

the Bund with which the Viceroy was in communication by

quarter, made a spirited attack on the Yamen of the

Provincial Treasurer, which was guarded by 100 soldiers,

and killed or wounded twelve men before they fled with

telephone.

The number of revolutionaries killed in the fighting

seems to have been ridiculously small, only some seven or

eight, but forty-two were captured alive and summarily ex-

ecuted, 37 outside the Viceroy's, 3 outside the Tartar

General's Yamen, and 2 on the Execution Ground.

The loss-

es in killed and wounded among the police and soldiery num-

bered between 50 and 60. This disparity can only be ac-

counted for by panic on the part of the soldiery, and the

absolute fanaticism of the revolutionaries.

of both cases may be given.

An instance

A small military officer de-

tailed with 40 rank and file to escort three foreigners

out of the City on the morning of the 28th declined to go

further than the Great South Gate, saying that it was certain

death with so small an escort to traverse the New City.

On the other hand a party of five revolutionaries, probably

from the detachment which was repulsed from the Manchu

a loss of one killed.

Desultory street fighting went on all through

Friday the 28th, and a certain number of arrests were

made and a haphazard search begun, but the Government

seems to have taken no rigorous steps too root out the

remnants of the revolutionaries, merely taking pre-

cautions that none of them should escape, or any help

reach them from outside.

Another serious outbreak seems

to have been anticipated, and the main streets were kept

clear of all save soldiers.

Before daylight on the 29th a vigorous attempt

was made to force the Great North Gate from the inside

but this failed, and with it the last chance of escape

for the revolutionaries. Early in the morning the

Southern Gates were opened for a short while, but an

explosion of dynamite near the Kuel Te (
